Midsummer Magnetic Mistral

Incredible northern lights last night.  The show was so dynamic and fast with pulsing and dancing, I was having a hard time doing it any justice with long exposures.  I cranked up the ISO and took a series of 175, 1-sec exposures and made a time lapse video in effort to show how energetic the storm was.

Another April Aurora

Enjoyed a nice G1 storm tonight.  Weather was agreeable.  Just a few clouds in the sky for contrast.

Glass Caribou

The weather was fabulous today.  Sunny and very still.  Caribou lake has been glassy for hours and hours.

Four sunset rainbows

A thunder storm rolled in around sunset and produced a few rainbows.  Four to be exact.  The primary rainbow is easy to see; the secondary takes some squinting.  Each rainbow is "reflected" in the water.  However a rainbow is not an object and cannot be reflected.  The reflected rainbows are generated by light that has passed through different rain drops and has traveled a different path to your eyes.  Rather than the direct path to eyes like the sky bow, the light for the lake bows travels from the raindrops to the lake surface, then to your eyes.

The flare in intensity at the bottom of the bow was due to the sun peaking between the clouds, shown below

April Aurora

We had another aurora event.  Due to clouds I missed Thursday show, but Friday's follow up was still pretty nice.  Check out the video at the bottom!

Veiled Aurora

Northern lights peaking through a veil of clouds.  The red ray here was the only one I saw between 1:15 and 2:30am.

Amazing Aurora

Wow. I haven't seen aurora borealis like this in a long while.  The northern lights are so amazing.

Skipping rocks on the lake...in November

I have been waiting for conditions to be right for this.  A freshly frozen lake with thin layer of ice and no snow. Some rocks skipping across the icy surface makes a pretty cool noise.

Aurora borealis

Recent solar activity lit up the skies tonight.  Faintly visible with the bright moon surrounded by a colorful corona.  Long exposures brought out the color in the northern lights.  Caribou Lake made for a nice mirror.  I had to fight with condensation on my lens as the temp dropped to 39F and humid air came off the lake.  I got to see a really great shooting star...unfortunately not captured with the camera.  I also had the pleasure of listening to 4 or 5 Barred owls calling back and forth.

On my daily drive I spotted a large patch of milkweed.  I'll be dropping in there when ever I can to look for butterflies and caterpillars.
